Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park

Close to the border with Rwanda, Mgahinga National Park is a popular option for cross-over itineraries with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. It’s also the only place in Uganda where you can trek Golden Monkeys. A popular option is to combine gorilla trekking in Nkuringo (Bwindi) with a gorilla trek at Mgahinga.
Mgahinga is more secluded than Bwindi and the treks are not as challenging. There are fewer permits available here. Although gorilla families constantly cross the border from Rwanda to Uganda, there is only one family habituated to make contact in Mgahinga. Called the Nyakagazi group, it has five silverbacks, two adult females and three young gorillas.

Securing a Uganda Gorilla Trekking Permit

When it comes to Uganda gorilla trekking, securing a gorilla permit is essential. The current price for a gorilla permit is fixed at $700 USD per person. While there used to be discounts during the rainy season, it’s important to note that the permit prices remain the same throughout the year.

However, if you’re traveling during Uganda’s long rainy season (March to May) or the short rainy season (October to November), it may be easier to secure permits on short notice.

For peak travel months, such as January, February, June, July, and August, it’s crucial to plan well in advance as permits can sell out as early as a year before. The number of permits is strictly limited, so early planning is highly recommended to secure your spot.

Compared to neighboring Rwanda, Uganda offers a cost advantage with relatively cheaper permit prices. Currently, Rwanda’s gorilla permit prices stand at a staggering $1500 USD per person. This makes Uganda an appealing option for those seeking an incredible gorilla trekking experience without breaking the bank.

If you’re looking for a more immersive experience or have a keen interest in wildlife photography, you can consider joining the habituation team in the Rushaga section of southern Bwindi. This unique experience allows for up to four hours with the gorilla family, offering a chance to observe their behavior and interactions. However, please note that this experience comes at a higher cost of $1500 per person.

When is the best time to go trekking?

The Ethnographic Museum houses one of Africa’s finest ethnographic collections.

Seven galleries display historical, ethnographic, artistic and archaeological artefacts accompanied by visual aides, giving visitors a rich insight into the Rwandan culture.

The exhibits open with geographical and geological displays, moving on to items used in hunting, agriculture, animal husbandry, pottery, weaving and woodwork.

Traditional clothing and architectural methods are also illustrated, as well as the social importance of cattle. Descendants of the royal herd can be seen to this day at the King’s Palace in nearby Nyanza.

The final room reveals traditional customs and beliefs, history, culture, poetry and oral tradition and cosmology.

How difficult is the trek itself?

You should be prepared to walk through a challenging terrain of steep ridges and valleys, following animal paths through tangled undergrowth for about 3 hours, although sometimes contact can be made after 45 minutes, and other times 6 hours.

During the rainy season, the trekking routes can become very slippery and much more challenging. The rains can sometimes bring the gorillas to lower ground which can shorten the length of the trek, but you should be prepared to trek for up to 6 hours in any case.

The gorillas typically prefer the highlands, so the trek is made more challenging due to periods of steep gradients.
