Detailed 7 Days Rwanda Birding and Wildlife Safari

DAY 1: Arrival in Kigali

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, the gateway to Rwanda, our experienced team will warmly welcome you and ensure a smooth transfer to your accommodation. Take this day to relax and prepare for the exciting journey that awaits you.

DAY 2 : Birding in Akagera National Park

Enjoy a full day of birding in Akagera National Park. Explore the diverse savannah landscapes and have the opportunity to spot numerous bird species and other wildlife. In the afternoon, take a relaxing boat ride on Lake Ihema, where you can observe more birds and aquatic animals like crocodiles and hippos. End the day with relaxation, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

After a delicious breakfast, we will begin our journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive will take us through the beautiful Rwandan countryside, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills and picturesque landscapes. As we travel, our knowledgeable guide will share insights about the local culture, history, and wildlife.

The journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park is a full-day drive, allowing us to soak in the beauty of the surrounding scenery. Upon arrival in the evening, we will settle into our accommodation, where we can relax, enjoy a delicious dinner, and prepare for the upcoming birding experiences.

Get ready to explore the remarkable Nyungwe Forest National Park, a true haven for bird enthusiasts. This pristine montane rainforest is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, including an impressive variety of bird species. Nyungwe Forest is home to 310 bird species, with 27 of them being restricted to the Albertine Rift region. Embark on guided birding walks along the forest trails, led by experienced bird guides who will help you spot and identify the avian wonders.

Look out for the stunning Rwenzori Turacos, the elusive Grauer’s Rush Warbler, the melodious Red-throated Alethe, and the vibrant Purple-breasted and Blue-headed Sunbirds, among many others. As you immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the forest, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the rich avifauna of Nyungwe.

DAY 5 :Rugezi Swamp – A Birding Paradise near Volcanoes National Park

Embark on an exciting journey to Rugezi Swamp, a remarkable birding paradise situated close to Volcanoes National Park in the northwest of Rwanda. This wetland sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to observe a variety of water-loving bird species.

Marvel at the vibrant colors of the kingfishers, herons, and egrets as they gracefully navigate the tranquil waters. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this picturesque swamp and capture breathtaking photographs of these avian wonders.

DAY 6 : Transfer to Ruhengeri Area – North West of Rwanda

After breakfast, embark on a scenic transfer to Musaze in the northwest of Rwanda. Enjoy a day of driving, taking in the breathtaking views of the Congo Nile divide landscapes and the shimmering Lake Kivu. Arrive in the evening and settle in for relaxation, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

DAY 7: Morning Birding in Rugezi Swamp, Optional Canoe Ride, and Return to Kigali

Start the day with early morning birding in Rugezi Swamp, another designated Important Bird Area recognized by Birdlife International. The swamp is home to 43 bird species, including the Grauer’s swamp warbler and white-winged swamp warbler. If time permits, you can opt for a scenic canoe ride on the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera. Later, embark on the return journey to Kigali, where you’ll catch your flight back home, concluding your memorable 7-day Rwanda Birding and Wildlife Safari.
