Detailed 7 Days Discover Karamoja Cultural Tour

Day 1: Transfer to Kidepo National Park

Embark on a scenic journey from  Kampala to Kidepo National Park, located in the far North-Eastern part of Uganda. Admire the picturesque landscapes of the northern region during the 9-10 hours’ drive. Indulge in a delicious lunch in Gulu town along the way. Upon arrival at Kidepo National Park, check-in at your chosen lodge for dinner and a comfortable overnight stay.

Day 2: Full Day Game Drive – Narus Valley and Kidepo Valley

Start your day with an exhilarating game drive in Narus Valley, where you can spot the iconic “big four” game – lions, elephants, leopards, and buffaloes. Marvel at the diverse wildlife, including cheetahs, hyenas, kobs, oribi, zebras, and giraffes. Enjoy a bush breakfast amidst the natural splendor. Continue your adventure with a game drive in Kidepo Valley, closer to the South Sudan border, where you can observe ostriches and other fascinating animals. Visit the Kanangorok hot springs before returning to your lodge for a relaxing evening, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Climb Mount Morungole to Visit the IK Tribe

Embark on a hike to Mount Morungole, situated in the northern hills of Karamoja. This mountain is home to the IK tribe, the smallest tribe in Uganda. Immerse yourself in the IK community’s unique culture and enjoy breathtaking views of the valleys and the Eastern Rift Valley of Kenya and southern Sudan. After the hike, head to Kaabong Resort hotel for relaxation, dinner, and a well-deserved overnight stay.

Day 4: Visit the Dodoth Community – Transfer to Kotido

After breakfast, explore the fascinating culture of the Dodoth community, a Karamojong group settled in Kaabong. Experience their traditional way of life and gain insights into their customs. Later, transfer to Kotido, a 3-4 hours’ drive, and visit the Jie community, known for their warrior traditions. Check-in at La Maison Hotel for dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 5: Visit the Traditional Cattle Market – Transfer to Moroto (Overnight in a Kraal)

Witness the vibrant atmosphere of the traditional cattle market, where locals come to buy and sell cattle (held only on Wednesdays). Interact with the largest nomadic group in Africa, located in Kotido district. Engage in traditional activities, such as wrestling, learning about staple foods, beadwork, and archery. Afterward, proceed to Moroto, a 3-4 hours’ drive, and experience the authentic pastoral life of the Karamojong people by staying overnight in a kraal. Immerse yourself in their daily activities and stories, while being surrounded by grazing cows.

Day 6: Transfer to Kumi – Nyero Rock Paintings

Journey to the Eastern part of Uganda, specifically the Kumi district, where the Nyero rock paintings await. Admire the impressive rock art, attributed to the Batwa people who once inhabited the area. Capture memorable pictures and return to Kumi town for dinner and a restful overnight stay at Kumi Hotel.

Day 7: Transfer Back to Kampala/Entebbe

Enjoy an early breakfast before bidding farewell to Kumi. Begin your journey back to Kampala with en-route lunch in Jinja town. Take advantage of several stops along the way to stretch your legs and refresh. The approximately 7-8 hours’ road trip concludes with your drop-off at a location of your choice in Kampala/Entebbe or connection to Entebbe airport for your onward flight.
