11 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari

Day 1: Arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport in the capital city of Kigali, you will be warmly welcomed by our experienced team from Intaresafaris. They will provide a brief introduction to Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Afterward, you will be transferred to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park 

After breakfast, embark on a scenic journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park, a haven of biodiversity. Along the way, we will make a stop at the National Institute of Rwandan Museums in Butare. This renowned museum houses a remarkable collection of ethnographic and archaeological artifacts, offering insights into the rich history and heritage of the region. After exploring the museum, continue the drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park for relaxation, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 3: Morning Chimpanzee Trekking and Afternoon Nyungwe Canopy Walk

Start your day with an early breakfast before setting off on an exhilarating chimpanzee trekking adventure in the ancient forests of Nyungwe. Accompanied by experienced guides, you will trek through the dense vegetation, immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the park. Encountering our closest relatives, the chimpanzees, in their natural habitat will leave a lasting impression. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and a short relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk, an elevated walkway offering breathtaking views of the forest and its diverse flora and fauna. Retire to the lodge in the evening for relaxation and overnight accommodation.

Day 4: Transfer to Gisenyi via Kibuye, passing through the Congo Nile Divide trail

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Gisenyi, located on the shores of Lake Kivu. This picturesque journey will take you through the Congo Nile Divide trail, showcasing the stunning views of Lake Kivu and the charming resort towns of Kibuye. Arrive in Gisenyi in the afternoon and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure, with opportunities to relax, dine, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Overnight stay in Gisenyi.

Day 5: Relaxation on Lake Kivu and Transfer to Ruhengeri – Volcanoes National Park

Take advantage of a full day to unwind and enjoy the tranquil ambiance of Lake Kivu. Engage in a refreshing boat cruise, exploring the lake’s islands and taking in the serene surroundings. In the evening, transfer to Ruhengeri, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. Arrive late in the evening and settle in at your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking and Relaxation at the Lodge

After an early breakfast, head to the Volcanoes Park Headquarters in Kinigi for a pre-trek briefing. Embark on a thrilling journey to encounter the magnificent mountain gorillas. Accompanied by experienced trackers, trek through the lush forest, marveling at the rich flora and fauna. The magical moment of coming face-to-face with these gentle giants is truly unforgettable. After the gorilla trek, return to the lodge for relaxation and to relish the memories of this incredible experience.

Day 7: Golden Monkey Trekking and Lodge Relaxation

After breakfast, set out on an exciting golden monkey tracking expedition. Explore the forested slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes and witness the playful and captivating golden monkeys, known for their distinctive golden patch on their backs. Spend an hour observing these unique primates in their natural habitat. After the activity, return to the lodge for relaxation, refreshments, dinner, and overnight accommodation.

Day 8: Transfer to Kigali and Visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Center

After breakfast, depart from Ruhengeri and transfer back to Kigali, the capital city. Upon arrival, visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Center, a place of remembrance for the victims of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Pay your respects and gain deeper insights into this tragic period in Rwanda’s history. Enjoy lunch in Kigali and then proceed to your accommodation for overnight stay.

Day 9: Visit the Nyamata Genocide Site and Transfer to Akagera National Park

Start the day with a visit to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, where you will learn about the harrowing events that took place during the genocide. The site holds significant historical importance as it was a refuge where innocent lives were tragically lost. After the visit, continue the journey to Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda. Arrive in the afternoon and unwind at your lodge, enjoying dinner and overnight accommodation.

Day 10: Morning Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Cruise at Lake Ihema

Embark on an early morning game drive to explore the vast savannah landscapes of Akagera National Park. Witness the diverse wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and more. The morning game drive offers a chance to observe the predators and herbivores that call this park home. Afterward, indulge in a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 11: Transfer to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast, depart from Akagera National Park and transfer back to Kigali for your departure. Reflect on the incredible experiences and lasting memories created during your journey through Rwanda.
